The Scirocco IRID system
Passive tags and small reader/writers with a range of 2 to 3 metres: ID Tags come with unique 10 byte codes while Data Tags have 128 bytes of user memory. For portable use, there are reader/writers on a card to plug into industrial PDAs.   

Advantages
Unlike some RFID and microwave systems, metal structures and electromagnetic interference do not affect Scirocco IRID. The system is free of radio licensing restrictions and works outdors in all weather. 

Simple Requirements
All you need is line of sight between the reader and the tag, and a connection to your computer network for the data you want to read and write.
