How Bacardi-Martini improved distribution and cut costs

FDI systems capture ERP data then reformat documents and provide proof of delivery   

Bacardi-Martini distribute premium beverages throughout the UK.

Brands include their own Bacardi rum and Martini vermouth, and others such as Jack Daniel’s and Drambuie sold under commercial agreements.

The group also provides distribution services to First Drinks, the purveyor of famous brands like "Glenfiddich" Scotch whisky.

Requirement

Distributing the products of two companies to many customers through a single channel with shared IT and distribution resources was not easy.

• Delivery documents had to carry the right identity and be in the right format. Proof of delivery issues were a nightmare.
• Bacardi needed a variety of other documents: orders, customs sets, schedules and so on.
• Modifying the ERP system to fully support all Bacardi's distribution processes was out of the question.
• The multipart stationery Barcardi used in their matrix printers was no longer up to the job.

Solution

FDI started by capturing data streams to the matrix printers from the ERP system.

The SabreFDI system re-formatted the data and stored it in a database.

By applying Bacardi’s business process rules the software then:

• Printed the documents on laser printers at each site 
• Captured POD images and data at three locations.
• Sent out emails and faxes to people responsible for resolving delivery problems
• Produced reports on missing PODs from each carrier.

Benefits

Direct savings paid for the system within 18 months. Some of many intangible benefits:

• Delivery errors were reduced
• Delivery issues were resolved faster
• POD tracking was much improved

Regular Key Performance Indicator (KPI) reports helped management to improve customer service and reduce supply chain costs.
